EXTREME SKETCHING
A brief film by Stefan Davidovici and Michele Favale about the extraordinary experience of sketching while climbing is available on youtube. Drawing is about understanding and reflecting through your own mind, eye and hand the reality around you. Nowhere is sketching more natural than on the alpine rock walls, amazing cathedral-like spaces that the climber perceives with the whole body.
Thanks to Michele Favale and his drone for trying to capture some of these amazing moments; to fellow climbers Claudio Sormani, Valentina De Felice and Federico Montagna for gently accepting the weird idea of me sketching while climbing together; and to Giovanni Pesce for the discussion that started all of this.
IMAGINARY ARCHITECTURE SEEN BY COMME DES GARCONS
"There’s always the possibility—or danger—that (in) Rei Kawakubo’s work you see (...) what’s going on inside your own head", says Sarah Mower in Vogue about the last Paris show of Comme des Garçons. It certainly happens to me, because here is my own drawing, transformed in high fashion by the magic hands of Kawakubo. I am honoured and happy to see my own work in a totally new light.

THE WATER TERMINAL. HOUSING UNIT 17, BEER SHEBA, 2017.
The project of the new HOUSING UNIT 17 in BEER SHEBA, Israel, responds to a call for a new type of community, autonomous in terms of energy consumption and situated in the 'no man's land' areas between the actual city and the surrounding desert.
The Unit works as a testing ground for new technologies related to the use of water recycling and energy production. But the 'industrial' spaces are not relegated to some inaccessible basement. Instead, they become part of the overall project and are indistinguishable from other public and private spaces.
This philosophical and functional choice gives the whole Unit its original, peculiar personality.
The dialogue with the strong, severe, pitiless but gorgeous nature of the surrounding desert is the other fundamental of the design approach.

The mountains are different. They get us into the sky. They are tough. They are real. In the mountains, you are real too.
Climbing is the most extraordinary way of experiencing the mountains. The feeling of space around you is matchless.
